Along with a tradition for embracing the transgressive, from subject matter to aesthetics, industrial has a long history of reimagining classic songs in the genre's trademark sinister, mechanical tones. Rising standard-bearers 3TEETH are no exception to the rule, with two such offerings on the soundtrack for the over-the-top Daniel Radcliffe action flick Guns Akimbo.
The band's take on Dead or Alive's schlocky "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" is a polished, thumping club jam with no dope but plenty of ecstasy. Their take on Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," on the other hand, is a raw and manic, Prodigy-tempo'd assault that would sound right at home alongside Ministry's rendition of "Radar Love." Imagine an alternate universe where Neo co-hosted Wayne's World and the duo threw their energy into helping Trinity's band land a record deal. Are you still following me? Good.
Revolver recently caught up with 3TEETH frontman Alexis Mincolla, who over the course of our conversation shared his five favorite industrial covers.
Revolting Cocks - "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy"
This might be the single greatest industrial-rock cover ever created. It's somehow both simultaneously sexy, disgusting and hilarious. It's the kind of song that makes me want to give a lap dance to an old man in mustard-stained sweat pants at an American Legion Hall. Don't ask.
Ministry - "Lay Lady Lay"
Strangely enough, this is actually one of my favorite Ministry songs — let alone cover songs. It's a perfect example of really making a cover your own thing. People will think I'm crazy, but I personally think Al's voice works better than Bob's for this one.
Nine Inch Nails - "Dead Souls"
This song hits me right in the Nineties nostalgia bone, as I used to spin The Crow soundtrack relentlessly as a teenager. Trent manages to give it its own unique emotive quality that only he could do.
Sisters of Mercy - "Gimme Shelter"
Not sure if this one accounts for an industrial cover, but goth and industrial make good bedmates. Plus, I adore Andrew Eldritch. I also feel like this would be an extremely easy cover to fuck up on because the original is just too perfect, but somehow they make it a goth club banger.
Marilyn Manson - "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"
This cover is peak Manson, just undeniably well done. I also just love how disturbing the lyrics become when processed through Manson's sonic palette.
