Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in Viking-metal, doom, hardcore and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist.
HEALTH - "Cold Blood" Feat. Lamb of God
HEALTH have a Terminator-like ability to absorb the characteristics of any of their collaborators and pass as one single entity, so of course they managed to find harmony with a band as distinct sounding as Lamb of God. "Cold Blood" is all pile-driving groove-metal in the verses and gauzy industrial during the hooks, but the best part comes when the two styles collide for its earth-shattering final breakdown and sound like an alternate universe where LoG channeled Ministry instead of Pantera.
VOWWS - "One By One"
You'd think a band playing self-described "death-pop" wouldn't sound so goddamn invigorating. On its surface, VOWWS' latest has all the scowly, pale-faced stoicism of your local goth pack who're too cool to dance, but "One By One" they'll leave their roost in the back of the room, hit the floor and lose themselves in this song's taut bursts of distorted crunch, steamy plumes of shoegaze guitar and sensuously gliding rhythm. Funereal fun in the club.
Inclination - "A Decision"
When Isaac Hale isn't laying down mosh riffs in Knocked Loose or producing records for the likes of Wristmeetrazor and SeeYouSpaceCowboy, he's playing in the straight-edge metallic hardcore bruisers Inclination. "A Decision," one of two new bangers they released this week, channels heavy Nineties acts like Strife and Unbroken, but keeps things fresh with modern production and vocal features from One Step Closer's Ryan Savitski and Russell Bussey of fellow edge torchbearers Magnitude. X'd up or not, this is a must-listen.
Messa - "Rubedo"
Messa contain multitudes. Last fall, we premiered the Italian band's enchanting, Eastern-influenced doom song, "Pilgrim," which sounds considerably different than their new track, "Rubedo," despite the fact that both will appear on their forthcoming album, Close. Singer Sara's robust vocal range whisks this one in to the sky from the jump, but halfway through it suddenly bursts into a whipping gallop that verges on death-metal. A magnificent guitar solo shreds above the chaos, and then it cuts into a bluesy desert-rock swing with Zeppelin-y lead licks. All of it works.
Amon Amarth - "Put Your Back Into the Oar"
Amon Amarth have provided the makings for a hot new TikTok dance. "Put Your Back Into the Oar" is a gift from the Swedish Viking-metal titans to their enthusiastic fans who love to mime a mighty warrior row during their shows, but we think this banger has enough legs to become the next viral dance trend. "Row, row, row," they chant instructively during its mountainous bridge. We've already seen sea shanties have their 15 minutes of TikTok fame, so now it's time for big bearded dudes bellowing melodeath tributes to Odin to get their shine.
Vein.FM - "Wavery"
This new Vein.FM album is gonna be a doozy, isn't it? We already heard the Boston hardcore bruisers in their mosh bag on lead single "The Killing Womb," then explore their post-hardcore side on "Fear in Non Fiction" with Geoff Rickly, and now they're leaning further into eerie alt-metal on the hauntingly heavy new crusher, "Wavery." The Deftones influence is felt on this one, but Vein.FM aren't fully letting go of their Converge-y metallic hardcore roots, which makes for a fascinating blend of sensibilities that only Vein.FM are weaving together this effectively.
