Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in hardcore, industrial, heavy metal and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist.
GWAR - "Mother Fucking Liar"
Who in their right mind double-crosses Blöthar the Berserker?? GWAR's latest is a vicious callout to those who defy good-natured Scumdogs with callous untruths, and it sounds kind of like if Madball were fronted by a guy with massive udders protruding from his crotch and horns spiking out of his head. Its chant-along hook will be carved into your brain after the first go-around, and the band's visceral disdain for "mother fucking liars" is fun to get riled up to.
Heriot - "Carmine (Fills the Hollow)"
Heriot make metalcore that's so fucking ear-bleedingly heavy — nuclear-sized bass rumbles, noggin-bashing drums and skin-searing guitar tones — it'll send death and black metal purists back to the practice room with their heads hung in shame. Their long-awaited debut EP, Profound Morality, does offer a few stray moments of eerie cleans and ambient swells to temporarily stop the bleeding, but standout "Carmine (Fills the Hollow)" supplies no such respite. Just cruel sonic subordination from start to finish — which is what Heriot do best.
Final Light - "In the Void"
Cult of Luna's Johannes Pearson and Perturbator mastermind James Kent both specialize in gigantic, cinematic soundscapes, and Final Light is nothing short of a celebration of their mutual expertise. The post-metal frontman and industrial-metal maverick sound like they're trying to make the musical equivalent of a Michael Bay film on "In the Void," an elaborate suite of nonstop metallic action that builds to improbably loud, earth-rumbling proportions. Minimalists, be warned.
Terror - "Pain Into Power"
The singles from Terror's new album, Pain Into Power, have been some of the heaviest songs they've ever released. By teaming up with Nails mastermind Todd Jones — who shaped Terror's early iteration with his singularly mean riff style — the band have aged 20 years in reverse, or at least it sounds that way on the record's unrelentingly furrious title-track. "Still dedicated to hard-core," Scott Vogel chants after his bandmates crunch through a mosh part that could put a hole in concrete.
Lions at the Gate - "Find My Way" (Feat. Tatiana Shmayluk)
Featuring former members of Ill Niño, Lions at the Gate's handful of debut singles bring the classic Roadrunner Records sound into the 2020s, buffing it out with gigundo production and suavely sung clean choruses that pull their way up out of the metallic wreckage. Jinjer frontwoman Tatiana Shmayluk makes a well-placed appearance on "Find My Way," fuming above marching beat that recalls Slipknot's "Psychosocial" and even sticking around to sing a few robust clean lines herself.
Yatra - "Death Cantation"
While Yatra's 2020 album dragged tattered black-metal vocals into their churning sludge-stoner jams, no fan could've guessed that their next LP would be a full front-flip into straight-up death metal. But that's what happened, and we're here for it. "Death Cantation" is faster than anything the Maryland crew have ever penned, with galloping blast-beats and head-crushing groove breaks rumbling beneath deliciously savage OSDM riffage that's imbued with an ever-so-slight trace of their bluesy origins. The vocals are utterly monstrous. Shit rules.
