Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in hardcore, alt-metal, grunge and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist.
Sleep Token - "Take Me Back to Eden"
Quite possibly the most hyped metal album of the year thus far has arrived. Sleep Token's Take Me Back to Eden is an hour-long epic that'll take us way longer than a day to digest in full, but its title track was an immediate standout. The U.K. band's masterful use of pregnant pauses and eerie tension are on fully display here, so when it all crashes into a torrent of djenty destruction, it feels like a tidal wave coming out of your speakers.
Mutoid Man - "Call of the Void"
Is this Mutoid Man's most infectious song yet? It just might be! The trio of Cave In's Stephen Brodsky, Converge's Ben Koller and High on Fire's Jeff Matz are finally following up 2017's quirky War Moans, and "Call of the Void" is a phenomenal preview. The band's catchy, almost-hammy punk-metal has never sounded sharper or more dialed in, and between this gooey hook and the amazing melodies on last year's Cave In opus, Brodsky is on a serious roll right now.
Buggin - "Snack Run"
At this point we just want the whole album, because every Buggin single thus far has been a total romp. "Snack Run" is another chunky, springy, serrated, playful hardcore banger from the Chicago band's forthcoming LP, Concrete Cowboys, and this one is literally dedicated to the honorable ritual of the late-night snack run. You don't often hear that type of good-natured humor in Buggin's neck of the hardcore woods, but they did it right here.
Margaritas Podridas - "Corazón"
Hailing from Hermosillo, Mexico, Margaritas Podridas make a type of noisy punk music that sounds like what grunge was right before Nevermind broke. New single "Corazón" is squally and hobbling, with screaming guitars and erratic vocals that howl through distortion in search of violent catharsis. It's the type of punk that grabs you by your neck collar and commands you pay attention. Succumb to its force.
Koyo - "You're on the List (Minus One)"
Like their Long Island predecessors in Taking Back Sunday, the Movielife and more, Koyo are players from the hardcore scene who are basically making pop-punk now, but with a hardcore energy about them. The fast-rising band's upcoming album, Would You Miss It?, has serious breakthrough potential, and "You're on the List (Minus One)" is the exact type of song that'll take them there. Anthemic, honest, catchy and scream-able, let this be your reprieve from the breakdown stuff.
Ghost - "We Don't Need Another Hero" (Tina Turner cover)
Ghost are no strangers to the cover song, but it's still such a treat to hear them put their ghastly spin on a track from outside of the metal world, like "We Don't Need Another Hero." Tina Turner's New Wave classic, written for 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, actually sounds pretty natural in the hands of Tobias Forge, who buffs up the guitars and cranks the Iron Maiden-iness of the vocals to craft a whole new stadium banger.
