Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in alt-metal, metalcore, folk-metal and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. Spiritbox - "Jaded"
There's no mistaking a Spiritbox song for anyone else. "Jaded" has all the hallmarks of the Canuck unit's icy alt-metal sound. Djent riffage that rumbles like a chunk of glacier breaking off and crashing into the choppy sea. Menthol-coated clean singing from vocalist Courtney LaPlante, who then quickly turns around to breathe fire when the heavy parts come in. Spiritbox's new EP is called The Fear of Fear, but they sound confident as ever on "Jaded."
The Callous Daoboys - "Waco Jesus"
The Callous Daoboys' 2022 LP, Celebrity Therapist, was one of the best albums of last year. "Waco Jesus" almost single-handedly trounces it. The Atlanta mathcore juggernaut's new single is a thrilling gut-punch that wields shrieking pinch-harmonic guitar leads, pounding rhythms, concussive production and the most soulful, talented clean vocal performance frontman Carson Pace has ever delivered. The Daoboys have somehow gotten even Daoboys-ier.
Myrkur - "Like Humans"
Myrkur caught international ears in the later half of the 2010s with her visionary blend of traditional Danish folk music and searing black metal. On 2020's Folkensage, the project helmed by Amalie Bruun dropped most of the metal to focus on the folk, but "Like Humans" — the first taste of her new album, Spine — is a return to foreboding form. Bruun's haunting vocals are still center stage, but the blast beats do make an appearance at the end of the song, and the whole thing has an urgent, menacing energy to it.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy - "Chewing the Scenery"
On their 2021 album, The Romance of Affliction, SeeYouSpaceCowboy looked beyond their sasscore roots to add soaring emo hooks and knotty post-hardcore riffage into their musical reference bank. "Chewing the Scenery" sounds like a logical progression for the San Diego band. Connie Sgarbossa's sassy taunts are still here, and the two breakdowns are bludgeoning. But the Underoath-y chorus goes, "Who'll stop the bleeding, if you're stabbing my heart with the dullest of knives?" Emo as fuck — in the best way possible.
Mouth for War - "Under the Gun"
Yeah, they're named after a Pantera song, but don't expect swaggering groove-metal from these Colorado boulder-crushers. "Under the Gun" is a hulking slab of relentless metalcore that's laced with a few whirring death-metal leads, some gnarly deathcore breakdown patterns and all the raw grit of a true-blue metallic hardcore like Knocked Loose or Jesus Piece. This is music that's so heavy it makes your arms sore to listen to it.
Silent Planet - "Collider"
Silent Planet's last single, "Antimatter," was packed with throbbing synths that practically made it feel ready for the dancefloor. "Collider" has some skittering breakbeats in there, but otherwise, the California metalcore band are focused on shining melody with this new single from Superbloom, their first album since the horrific van crash they endured in 2022. "Collider" sounds as resilient and creative as anything Silent Planet have ever released.
