Jerry Cantrell has a new album on the way. The Alice in Chains vocalist-guitarist has announced a new record called Brighten that marks his third solo LP, and the first since 2002's Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2. The full project arrives later this fall, but today (July 29th), the Seattle figurehead is giving people a taste with a new song called "Atone."

The track is a little less heavy from the type of songwriting that Cantrell usually reserves for Alice in Chains, but it still features spindly distorted guitar that weaves in between a dusty outlaw country lick. "Got a find a way to atone," is the phrase that Cantrell repeats with a slight air of desperation during the hook before ultimately launching into a mighty belt.

Like many songs on the album, "Atone" features background vocals from ex-Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato, who provides gritty yet soulful harmonies alongside Cantrell's grungey yawp. It's a helluva track, and you can listen while you watch its eerie, desert-based video above via YouTube.

"As a fan of Ennio Morricone scores and Sergio Leone movies, it's got a bit of that outlaw vibe, with a cool psycho hillbilly stomp," Cantrell said of the track. "It's been kicking around in my head for like 20-plus years, haunting me. Sometimes it takes a while for a good idea to find its best form. Such was the case with 'Atone.'"

In addition to Puciato, Brighten also features select bass lines from Guns N' Roses' Duff McKagan, miscellaneous instrumentation from co-producer Tyler Bates, drumming from Gil Sharone (ex-Dillinger Escape Plan, Marilyn Manson) and many others. The track listing boasts eight original tunes and then closes with a cover of Elton John's "Goodbye," which got a ringing endorsement from the Rocket Man himself.

Brighten is set for release on October 29th. Revolver has an exclusive, limited-edition orange vinyl variant with glow-in-the-dark packaging. It's limited to 500 — order yours now!
