Any fan of both heavy metal and horror movies is likely to rank 2015's Deathgasm among their favorite films of all time — we here at Revolver HQ sure do. Ever since we first screened the New Zealand splatstick cult classic, we've been clamoring for a sequel, and now it looks like we're finally gonna get it. As reported by Variety, writer, director and diehard metalhead Jason Howden is returning for Deathgasm 2.
The sequel is set to start filming in New Zealand next year, with Howden — who also helmed Guns Akimbo, starring Daniel Radcliffe and featuring 3TEETH on the soundtrack — to write and direct. Kimberley Crossman is confirmed to return as Medina Darcy, and Howden is reportedly in talks with other members of the original cast, including Milo Cawthorne (Brodie) and James Blake (Zakk), about reviving their roles in the new movie.
In the sequel, which is produced by Raven Banner Entertainment, Deathgasm's hero Brodie turns to black magic, as he did in the original, this time to raise his former bandmates from the dead so he can win battle of the bands as well as the heart of his ex-girlfriend Medina (Crossman).
To bridge the two movies, Howden is co-writing a four-issue Deathgasm comic book series for Opus Comics. It's due on newsstands in December. The filmmaker recently collaborated with Opus on another metal and horror comic book series, Monsters of Metal, which Howden is also adapting into a film.
"I'm thrilled to be working with Raven Banner and Opus Comics to expand the Deathgasm universe and bring the evil-crushing power of metal to new and existing audiences," Howden commented. "Like we saw with Eddie Munson in Stranger Things, not all heroes wear capes. Some wear Anthrax tees and denim vests."
