Legendary drummer Dave Lombardo, who has manned the kit for giants such as Slayer, Misfits, Testament, Suicidal Tendencies, Mr. Bungle and many others, has released another solo track. "Inner Sanctum" is another enigmatic cut from the percussionist's debut solo album, Rites of Percussion, out next month.
Lombardo already opened his pandora's box of drumming techniques on the previous singles, "Journey of the Host" and "Separation from the Sacred," and his gigantic range has expanded even further with "Inner Sanctum." The fresh cut is a surrealistic and hypnotic blend of intricate drumming, set to background drones and a tribal atmosphere.
"Inner Sanctum" gives Lombardo's fans another deep look into the solo record, which will feature the thrash legend playing a large concert bass drum, a timpani, a grand piano, an array of shakers, maracas, Chinese and symphonic gongs, Native American drums, congas, timbales, bongos, batás, wood blocks, djembes, ibos, darbukas, octobans, cajóns and cymbals.
Fans can listen to "Inner Sanctum" above and pre-order Rites of Percussion here, which is out May 5th via Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings.
In fact, it was Patton who gave Lombardo the initial push to make a solo debut.
"Patton originally gave me the idea as far back as 1998," Lombardo explained of the album's origin story. "He introduced me to Tito Puente's Top Percussion album. I was already familiar with Tito and was a bit shocked that Patton was so musically diverse, and that he surrounded himself with musicians of the same mindset. That inspired me. I have had ideas that I've recorded on cassette over the years, but Patton kept insisting that I had to do a 'drum album.' So, the idea behind the album is years in the making. I just had to find the right time — for me — to do it."
