Anyone paying attention to hardcore these days knows Scowl. The Santa Cruz band's debut LP, How Flowers Grow, was one of the best hardcore albums of 2021, and then last year their buzz rose exponentially when they toured with Limp Bizkit, played standout sets at major hardcore fests and became one of the genre's must-see live bands. Now, Kat Moss and Co. are returning with a new EP called Psychic Dance Routine, out later this spring via Flatspot Records.
Judging by today's (February 8th) lead single, "Opening Night," the band will be exploring catchier sounds on this new batch of songs.
The majority of the two-minute track features Moss singing tunefully instead of snarling angrily, as her bandmates bang out an arrangement that evokes Nineties alt-rock groups like the Breeders and Sleater-Kinney. Of course, there's still an ass-kicking hardcore strut at the end, but "Opening Night" sounds like just that — the debut of Scowl's next act.
