March is Women's History Month, a time to reflect, celebrate and advocate. With that in mind, we asked a number of our favorite artists to highlight some of the women who have most inspired them. Up today, Maria Brink, singer of theatrical alt-metal outfit In This Moment. She chimed in fresh off the release of her band's dramatic, multifaceted seventh album, Mother — which, fittingly, features guest turns from two of the today's other leading female rock stars, Halestorm's Lzzy Hale and the Pretty Reckless' Taylor Momsen.
1 and 2. My mothers
The first two woman I am going to say are my mothers. They are strong, powerful warrior women who have taught me everything that I know. They inspire me, they never doubt me or my crazy ideas. They showed me the boundaries that they have broken down and things they have conquered and continuously are a support system in my life and are my inspiration.
3. Queen Elizabeth I
I was always drawn to her story and her strength. She was a queen who ruled without a king, and it was a very powerful thing that she displayed for the world — to be such a powerful ruling Queen of England — and never marry. Not that there is anything wrong with marrying or anything wrong with kings, but to show that she could do it on her own as a queen always was very, very inspiring to me and moving to me.
4. Mother Teresa
Her selflessness, how she inspired [others] to help and to give, is always so moving to me. What a saint she is and what a blessing.
5. Joan of Arc
She was a young teenager who led an army and led a crusade, and had such faith and had such passion. She always moved me and her story inspired and fascinated me.
