The late, great Sinéad O'Connor was most famous for her iconic 1990 cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U." But four years later, she recorded a very different cover — of Nirvana's grunge anthem "All Apologies," off Kurt Cobain and Co.'s third and final studio album, In Utero.
O'Connor's hushed, haunting rendition appeared on her 1994 fourth LP, Universal Mother, which was released just months after Cobain's death by suicide. The following year, she promoted the record with an appearance on Dutch TV during which she performed the Nirvana cover.
It's a spare and striking performance that showcases the Irish singer's broken-angel vocals to poignant effect. It rang bittersweet in 1995 in the wake of Cobain's death, and even more so today, in the wake of O'Connor's. Watch above.
