The Spinal Tap sequel has been chugging along since early 2022, and in 2024, it's set to move forward in a big way.
Now that the Hollywood strikes are over, Rob Reiner's follow-up to his 1984 cult classic, This is Spinal Tap — currently dubbed Spinal Tap II — will begin filming in February of next year.
Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are set to return as as Nigel Tufnel, David St Hubbins and Derek Smalls, and Reiner will also be reprising his role as documentarian Marty DiBergi.
However, the movie will also boast some high-profile cameos. Sir Paul McCartney, Elton John and Garth Brooks will all have roles in Spinal Tap II, as Reiner revealed on Richard Herring's RHLSTP podcast this week.
Previously, Reiner said that the movie will be inspired by Martin Scorses's flick about the Band, The Last Waltz, and that the 40th anniversary of the original Spinal Tap will be involved in its plotline.
In 2022, he also revealed a brief plot synopsis to Deadline.
"They've played Albert Hall, played Wembley Stadium, all over the country and in Europe," Reiner said. "They haven't spent any time together recently, and that became the premise.
"The idea was that Ian Faith, who was their manager, he passed away. In reality, Tony Hendra passed away. Ian's widow inherited a contract that said Spinal Tap owed them one more concert. She was basically going to sue them if they didn't.
"All these years and a lot of bad blood we'll get into and they're thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert."
