Ghost are one of the biggest bands in the heavy music landscape, but they're not the easiest group to introduce a new listener to. Their ghastly, Satanic image suggests extreme-metal heaviness and some of their riffs do churn with a doomy girth, but most of their songs actually sound like uplifting pop-rock music. They're a band that requires a full dive into their whole discography (including 2022's forthcoming Impera) to fully grasp, but how would you go about trying to manifest a Ghost fan by playing them just a single track?
Revolver is here to help these curious newbies with our "Point of Entry" series, in which we ask artists to pick the one standout cut from across their entire catalog that they believe is the best place for virgin listeners to begin their journey. Below, Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge does the honors. It's a tough choice.
"Cirice"
I think "Cirice" is a good track for that because it sums up a lot of the concepts of the band lyrically and musically. There's a big handful of metal in there, but also AOR and melody. There's a sort of androgynous element that I like to try to harness into our songs, and I think 'Cirice' has that ambiguity — it's meant to sound dangerous. It's meant to sound double in nature and kind of deceiving. But you can also listen to it as a complete comfort track.
At the end of the day, that is what we do — we're trying to comfort people. We want people to understand that there is hope. Nothing lasts forever — not even bad things. Everything is fluid. I think 'Cirice' captures a lot of that.
