TOOL drummer Danny Carey says that new music may be coming sooner than we think. In a new interview with Cleveland Scene ahead of the prog-metal juggernaut's upcoming show there, Carey mentioned that he and his bandmates already "have head starts on three or four new songs" and that their next album likely won't take nearly as long to arrive as their last one.
Fans notoriously waited 13 years between 2006's 10,000 Days and 2019's Fear Inoculum, which the band are currently touring on after being waylaid for two years due to COVID-19. In the interview, Carey opened up about how it felt to have to wait all of that time without having new songs to play, and he reassured listeners that the next gap between albums "won't take us this long."
"It was frustrating not having new material to play, but that time really flew by quickly," Carey said. "I guess that's just the nature of life. It's like when you have kids, and they're grown up, and you go, 'What happened?' It took a long time, but we did a lot of touring and tried to grow in different ways and take a break from each other to keep things fresh.
"We also wanted to bring in outside influences, so we would have something new to say to each other musically. It all came together really well on this one. I'm sure it won't take us this long for the next one. We even had some stuff left over from the last one that we'll develop. We have head starts on three or four new songs."
He didn't elaborate any further, but knowing that TOOL already have new stuff in the tank is a very promising sign. Additionally, Carey revealed that the band are prepping a live DVD that he says will be "a good mind-blower for all the hardcore fans."
"Most of it will be from the Lateralus tour from 2002," Carey added.
