Ruby Da Cherry is the best known as half of the New Orleans hip-hop duo $uicideboy$, but he grew up playing in punk bands inspired by the likes of Misfits, Minor Threat and Leftover Crack. His DUCKBOY side project channels those seminal influences and others, as heard on its new, second EP, existential hymns for the average sigma (vol. 9), released today.
The EP showcases a bright, bouncy sound not far flung from the vibrant posi-core of $uicideboy$' past tourmates Turnstile. Crank it above via YouTube.
$uicideboy$ have always gone out of their way to bring punk and hardcore bands out on the road with them — from the aforementioned Turnstile to Knocked Loose, Code Orange and Trash Talk — and DUCKBOY finds Ruby Da Cherry bringing his passion for that kind of music to the forefront of his own creativity. He handled all the vocals and instruments heard on existential hymns for the average sigma (vol. 9), which follows up June's debut EP.
The DUCKBOY moniker represents the idea of "ducking" past life's trials and distractions.
Next up for $uicideboy$, they'll take their annual GREYDAY tour down under to Australia and New Zealand in March, joined by Ghostemane, Pouya and others. 2024 also marks the boys' 10th anniversary as a group.
